The Theology of Suffering

Oct 26, 2025    David Edwards

This sermon explores the biblical understanding of suffering, challenging the modern tendency to avoid discussing pain and hardship. Rather than viewing suffering as punishment or something strange, the message presents it as an expected part of the Christian journey that produces spiritual growth and steadfastness. The core theological framework is built on three foundational truths: God is able to deliver us, God is willing to deliver us, and God's wisdom is beyond our comprehension. Through suffering, believers are refined, their faith is tested, and they learn to rely not on themselves but on God. The sermon emphasizes that God doesn't always deliver us from the fire but walks through it with us, and that the most valuable spiritual growth often comes from irritation and pressure, much like a pearl forms in an oyster.
